I’ve relocated six times. Yep! I did all that. On purpose.
My first move was at age 10, leaving the Grenadines for England. Just imagine how that played out!
From sunshine, colorful houses to punk rockers, snow and 'dodgy' food. Culture shock was real THING!! And yet, somehow, it worked out eventually; with excitement, nervous realization, hope, stubbornness, homesickness. Faith. All the things!
We found a sense of belonging, made a home away from home, built a community of authentic friends, overcame a ton of obstacles. Sigh!!
And I kept doing it. I moved to France for a little bit as a student, then move to the USA - as a new wife. Back and forth, with baby, toddler. Tween . . . Eekk! that was rough.
If you have a story about migration, identity, or finding home in unexpected places, I'd love to hear from you
A move abroad is far more than geography, passports and container ships. It's cultural differences, identity shifts, grief, and mental wellness. It's the kids who don't want to go back! I had to do it every time. Even the homesickness, moments of loneliness.
I’ve created this expat podcast to talk about all this. To collaborate with you. To help others through it. Hear what every expat should know about starting over abroad, and the issue with 'fitting in'. Stuff I wish I knew years ago.
So whether you call yourself an expat or immigrant woman, you've landed in the right spot.
